POWMILL - 14th April 2002

Greetings from the Lothian & Central section (or the brass monkeys) given the temperatures we ride in. As many will know we had a very successful show and signed up many new members thanks to our super efficient Maureen and all who gave their time. We have had a couple of ride-outs since the show the first being to Newport on Tay on Wednesday 10th April when we gave some support to the new section being started up there. 6 of us went on our bikes, a ride of some 100miles round trip with temperatures of some 3 degrees on the way home. Thanks to the 2 pillion passengers who also braved the weather. Another 3 of the members travelled in their climate controlled cars, sad or what?. Our second outing was on Sunday 14th April to Powmill Farm Milk Bar. Those present were Mike (the bike) Easton, Jim(out for a duck) Readman and son, Big Ally and myself Auld Bill. Jim's new name will become clear as you read on!. We met at McDonald in the pouring rain crossed the Forth Bridge and proceeded along the Fife coast road at a leisurely law abiding pace (What else can you do when you have big polis leading the way) sorry Jim. We then turned off at Kincardine and headed towards our destination. A few miles up the road Mike disappeared up his own exhaust pipe and headed off into the distance. A few miles further on Jim came upon a very startled duck sitting in the middle of the road (must have been caught in the exhaust blast as Mike went by). He sounded his air horn whereupon the duck just looked at him thinking it was a mating call. Big Al who was following Jim immediately thought to himself Crispy Fried Duck and aimed a kick at it but missed. When I looked in my mirror I'm sure the duck was holding 2 feathers up in the air. When we finally arrived at Powmill Mike was trying to look as though he had been there for ages (his ear plugs were still in). Waiting there for us were Stan the Man also known as Horizontal because he is so laid back, Alan Bett in full riding kit of t-shirt and moustache and riding a Rover 200 (strange name for a bike). We were shortly joined by George and Anne on their Triumph along with Sandy on a Suzuki 250. After a chat and superb cream meringues we set off to see the Millennium Wheel at Falkirk, however we got there a bit early, it doesn't open till May. Anyway we are looking forward to the scorching weather we are accustomed to in this part of the world so we can keep on riding. Bill Bruce. PS Stans claim to fame is that he can ride the winding road we used keeping his bike bolt upright in the wet. This is truly a sight to behold, left cheek on left footpeg for left-handers, right cheek on right footpeg for right-handers. He was off the bike so much at one point we thought he had a sidecar on!.
